Lesotho (the land of the people who speak Sesotho ) covers 30,355 square kilometres (11,720 sq mi). The most notable geographic fact about Lesotho, apart from its status as an enclave, is that it is the only independent state in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) in elevation. Its lowest point is 1,400 metres (4,593 ft), and over 80% of the country lies above 1,800 metres (5,900 ft). Snow is common in the deserts and low valleys between May and September, the higher peaks can experience snowfalls year-round.

Lesotho is totally surrounded by South Africa and is making a reputation for itself as a fantastic adventure tourist destination. The Basotho people are very friendly and welcoming, and the country is relatively safe and politically stable compared to some of its neighbours. No post-apartheid effects, traditional lifestyles still very much alive and a laid back pace make Lesotho refreshingly different. Add superb mountain views, excellent hiking and horse riding trails, comfortable accommodation in lodges and hotels and most places are accessible with an ordinary rental car.

Maseru is the capital of and largest city in Lesotho. It is situated on the north western border with South Africa. Although there isn't a huge deal to see in Maseru, it is well worth stopping here upon entry into Lesotho to stock up before venturing further in (where there are very, very few Western shops).

The archeological sites of Hlotse and Quthing and the craftshops in Teyateyaneng are the main attractions of the “lowland”, but the “highlands” are Lesotho’s most beautiful area. Hiking or pony trekking
from village to village are the best ways to explore the mountains.

All National Parks lack the Big 5 but their rock formations, lakes and high-altitude grasslands offer a wonderful wilderness experience. Accommodation at the parks is basic but good.

Sani Pass is the only dependable route into Lesotho through the Drakensberg range in Kwazulu Natal. It offers wonderful views on clear days and unlimited hiking possibilities. It is a dangerous road, which requires the use of a 4x4 vehicle and above average driving experience. Tourists from all over the world come here for the thrill of getting up and down the pass.

On the edge of the escarpment ( 2784 mtr ) you’ll find the highest bar in Africa.

Hightlights:

The "Roof of Africa", the narrow road from Butha-Buthe to Sani Pass through dramatic mountain passes and valleys.
Pony trekking from village to village in the highlands.
Hiking in the northern highlands
The craftsshops of Hlotse,Maseru and Teyateyaneng
Thaba Bosiu, the hilltop fortress of Moshoeshoe I, the greatest king of Lesotho
The remote, 200 meters high Semonkong Falls
