The Gamtoos River Valley is a vibrant mix of nature, agriculture and cultural influences with plenty to see and explore along this diverse route. The Gamtoos River Valley lies adjacent to the world famous Garden Route, approximately 75km from the coastal city of Port Elizabeth (one of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup Final host cities), and is easily accessible from the N2 Highway. Patensie is the last stop before entering the Baviaanskloof Wilderness area.
Guarded by the majestic Cockscomb mountain, this little town's activities revolve around the Citrus Industry. It has become a very popular tourist destination with many B&B's and self-catering establishments, as well as fuel-stops, banks and shops to choose from. Tourism Information can be obtained from the Tolbos Country Shop and Tea Garden. Visit the impressive Kouga Dam built in 1967 - the first double-arched dam engineered in South Africa. Along the way, look out for unique rock formations - you may even be suprised to see Queen Victoria's profile!
The campsite is next to a mountain stream. Big yellowwood trees surround the area. The fully equipped (with gas facilities) chalet is situated in a tranquil kloof among indigenous forest. The chalet has two bedrooms with one double and two single beds and three sleeping couches in the lounge area. Basic facilities: there is one bathroom with a basin, flush toilet and hot shower. No electricity but gas facilities. The lounge has a fireplace and open wooden deck with braai facilities, braaiwood available.
There are two 4x4 routes. The 12 km long route is completed in three hours' time and the 20 km route takes five hours. Both routes go through a variety of veld types from aloes to fynbos in the mountains and indigenous forest in the kloofs. There is also a good chance of spotting nyala, bushbuck, duiker, rooibok and birds, such as the Knysna loerie, hawks and eagles. The route climbs to 570m at its highest point and there is a view site that offers a sweeping vista of the valley. At the other end of the trail visitors get a view of the Cockscomb mountain. 4X4 Route: R150 per vehicle.
Gonjah Chalet, Campsite and 4x4 route are situated 9km NW of Patensie (There is a bar in Patensie which is 10km away); 89km NW of Port Elizabeth; 55km NW of Jeffrey's Bay (surfing mecca) and 35km from Baviaanskloof Wilderness area. There are many attractions close by such as: Cape St Francis - luxury resort town Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve Game Reserves with Big Five sightings Addo Elephant National Park
RATES: Chalet sleeps 4 people ,minimum of R250 and maximum of R500 for 6 people.. Campsite R35 per person per night.
