15 Days Treasures of Limpopo

Limpopo and Mpumalanga offer a land of beautiful and contrasting landscape, which is typical for South Africa. Hence the region has become a favourite destination for leisure and adventure travellers worldwide. This self drive takes you to a region of infinite scenic beauty with a great diversity of natural and manmade attractions, rich cultural heritage and an abundance of wildlife and nature-based tourism opportunities.

Mokopane is on the foot of the gentle hills of the Waterberg. Attractions include the Big 5, ancient rock paintings, tropical gardens and traditional dancing.

The Soutpansberg is a region with amazingly diverse flora and fauna, many rock painting sites and is in the centre of Venda Land. A land where myth and legend continue to play a role in every daylife.

The mountains of Haenertsburg, Magoebaskloof and Agatha are linked via the scenic George Valley’s Road, which comprises indigeneous forests, cascading waterfalls and placid lakes. Some of South Africa’s most beautiful forests and grasslands occur here, over 200 different orchids grow here and the birdlife is prolific.

Phalaborwa and Hoedspruit are Limpopo’s main gateways to the Kruger National Park. They make a convenient launching point
for exploring the central and northern part of the park.

The Blyde River Canyon is one of South Africa’s most impressive natural fenomena. Combined with a visit to the historic gold mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest, it’s easy to explore the canyon by car as a day jaunt from Sabie.

In the middle of trout country lies Dullstroom, surrounded by rolling hills and small lakes. It offers superb hiking, excellent horse trails and picninc spots besides bretahtaking waterfalls.

Accommodation ranges from Safari Lodges and Bush Lodges in private game reserves to luxury B&B’s and Guest Houses.

Mokapane
and immediate surroundings boast fascinating ancient caves, the 'Big Five', San rock art, curios, typically bushveld food and drinks such as biltong (dried meat) and mampoer (a traditional - and potent - African alcoholic beverage distilled from fruit), tropical gardens and traditional dancing.

The Country Estate is on an indigeneous farm where the Waterberg Mountains meet the Springbok Flats. Situated between Mokopane ( Potgietersrus ) and Mookgapong ( Louis Trichardt ), the Estate offers stylish comfort , each room has its own private entrance and easy access to the dining room and garden. All units are stylishly decorated and equipped with a bar fridge, DSTV, and air conditioning.

Day 4/5 : Mokopane - Makhado/Louis Trichardt ( appr. 175 km)

Situated in a highly fertile, rapidly growing agricultural area, Makhado has become one of Limpopo's premier business and tourist destinations and is the perfect springboard from which to visit the Songozwi sacred burial site of the vhaVenda, as well as Makhado's 'office', a secluded cave from where the chief conducted his campaign against the Voortrekkers.

Various routes around the town highlight interesting aspects of the area such as the fruit route to farms where a variety of fruit and nuts are produced. The arts and crafts route in the Elim area, where sisal mats, candles, silkscreen prints, batik articles, traditional vhaVenda pots and woodcarvings are made, also provides insight into the life of the Shangaan people.

The Guest House lies in a lovely, lush valley in the foothills of the Soutpansberg Mountain range. It is centrally situated for visits to Venda land and the Northern regions of the Limpopo province. The morning call of the birds will wake you, while at night the cries of the bush babies will put you to sleep.
Accommodation is on B&B basis, dinner can be arranged by prior request.

Known as the capital of the 'land of the silver mist' after T.V. Bulpin\'s famous book on the area, the picturesque village of Haenertsburg in the Magoebaskloof mountains is perched on the slopes of the Wolkberg and Drakensberg, offering tourists a wonderful selection of things to do and see. The village is home to about 350 families and a further 2,500 people who live 'on the mountain', as the locals say.

Haenertsburg is well endowed with operators offering outdoor activities like hiking, abseiling, climbing and mountain biking.

Touching the edge of an expanse of evergreen Afro-montane forest, the Guest Farm overlooks the home of the rare Samango monkeys. The units are set in one of the most beautiful gardens of the Magoebaskloof.

Accommodation is on B&B basis, a health breakfast is included.

Day 8/9 : Haenertsburg - Phalaborwa ( appr. 155 km)

The Mopani region in the Lowveld is one of the last unspoilt corners of Africa – vast, unhurried, timeless. It offers vast expanses that seem untouched by the passage of time and remain unmistakably African.

Phalaborwa ( Town of Two Summers) serves as a convenient gateway to the Kruger National Park and the Limpopo Transfrontier Park through the Giriyondo borderpost.
Situated within walking distance of the central gate to the Kruger National Park, the town is an ideal base from which to explore the world's most famous game reserve and the many scenic attractions of the Lowveld.
The Bush Lodge is set in the heart of the African Bush, 10 minutes north of Phalaborwa and is conveniently close to the Kruger National Park and the famous Hans Merensky Golf Club.

Accommodation is on B&B basis, dinner can be arranged by prior request.

Day 10/11 : Phalaborwa - Hoedspruit ( appr. 90 km)

Bordering on the Kruger National Park, Hoedspruit lies in the heart of the central Lowveld and is conveniently situated to explore the many game lodges, game reserves and other attractions in the vicinity.

Here towering cliffs meet endless expanses of bushveld, where vast plains of marula, acacia, combretum and mopane woodlands accommodate a wealth of wildlife and stretch as far as the eye can see.
The Safari Lodge is situated in the vast Balule Nature Reserve. You will enjoy the intimacy and privacy of a small camp. The Lodge is nestled under age-old trees with a panoramic view over the bush and a well frequented waterhole.

Your stay here includes all meals, an early morning foot safari and an evening game drive.

Day 12/13 : Hoedspruit - Sabie ( appr. 180 km)

The Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world, God’s Window, the 3 Rondavels, Bourke Luck’s Potholes are on the route to Sabie. Its attractions are a cool climate, trout fishing, extensive pine and eucalyptus plantations, almost unlimited possiblities for outdoor activities and easy access to Kruger. Nearby Pilgrim’s Rest, an historic mining town, is a national monument.

The Guest House is situated in a very quiet street opposite the Sabie gorge, only 5 minutes from the shops and restaurants. After a long day exploring the Panorama Route, you can enjoy a sundowner in the beautiful garden.
